Art and Design, and Design Technology
The Art curriculum at Brunswick Park is designed around 3 core areas: drawing, paint and colour and printing and texture. Each year group follows the same structure throughout the year to allow children to revisit and reinforce core skills and knowledge. This approach also allows children to develop a range of techniques and to use a variety of materials. Within Art topics, children will be exposed to the work of a variety of artists and will learn to describe and analyse a range of artistic works. Over the course of their time at the school, children will also be given the chance to explore digital art in specific units. Where appropriate links will be made to the wider curriculum and to further develop our Art curriculum each year group will take one trip a year based on the Art curriculum
In the same way, Design and Technology focuses on 3 key areas: food technology, design briefs and structures. Each area will be explored over the course of a parallel half term in every year group. This develops the key skills of every child and gives them the opportunity to build and apply a variety of skills and techniques. Children will be encouraged to evaluate their work and communicate their ideas during the design process.
Children’s artwork is displayed attractively in classrooms and communal areas. The children are taught to produce pleasing end products and are encouraged to value their preliminary work. They are also given the opportunity to contribute to large artistic works to enhance end of term concerts. In the EYFS, Design and Technology is taught through Understanding the World and Expressive Art and Design. In Key Stage 1, Design and Technology is blocked out alternately with Art and Design and is linked to the half-termly topic.
