Maths at Brunswick Park

Home Maths at Brunswick Park
Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement - Maths

Teaching for Mastery

White Rose Maths is taught from Year 1 – Year 6. Our staff work with the London South East+ Maths Hub to introduce Teaching for Mastery at Brunswick Park across the school. Mastery means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of maths. Children use manipulatives, maths language and reasoning skills to develop a secure and adaptable understanding of mathematics.

White Rose is a leader in the field of Mastery in Mathematics. If you are interested in learning more about our schemes of work, resources or Teaching for Mastery, please see the many free resources available on the White Rose Website https://whiterosemaths.com/ or speak to Edel Fallon, Evie Macdonnell or Thomas Moudiotis.

N.B – To ensure teaching meets the needs of individual children, teachers will adapt some/all of statements to ensure there is sufficient challenge and pace in class.

EYFS:

In line with the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, teachers guide their classes through challenging and engaging maths lessons focusing on Number and Numerical Patterns. These are the areas which are statutory under the 2021 EYFS Framework. Children are also exposed to activities involving shapes and measurement.

WRM Schemes of Work are used to support children’s learning in the EYFS

Reception:

Mastering Number:

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 access the NCETM Mastering Number programme. The aim of this is to secure firm foundations in number sense for all children from Reception to Year 2. It develops fluency in calculation and confidence and flexibility with number. More information about it can be found here: https://www.ncetm.org.uk/maths-hubs-projects/mastering-number/

In preparation for Reception, our Nursery pupils are beginning to use the White Rose Nursery scheme of learning. From November 2024, pupils will use these resources to develop firm foundations in number sense from 0-5 while also ensuring a hands on, practical approach to learning.

Policies:

These documents will help parents and carers understand the concrete, pictorial and abstract methods, used in school to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in Years 1-6.

Homework:

Age-appropriate maths homework is set weekly at Brunswick Park on Times Tables Rock Stars from Spring Term in Year 1. Parents and carers can help children process their learning by asking their child to ‘become the teacher’ and explain what has been learned that day at school. As maths is a part of everyday life, it is valuable to make mathematical connections with your children both at home and outside.
