Brunswick Park Primary School
– English as an Additional Language (EAL)
At Brunswick Park we aspire for all children to achieve their best and we understand that our children come from a rich cultural background. A significant number of children at our school have English as an additional language (EaL) and we see this group of children as being very important.
We have systems in place to ensure that all children, no matter their level of confidence in communicating in English are able to access all of their education. In all areas of the school children are supported in their language acquisition. Please read below to see how we do this in each phase of the school.
EYFS – Ratios of adults to children are kept deliberately high so that we can offer a language rich experience for the youngest children. They are immersed in high quality, engaging texts and all subject areas are explored verbally and through well planned and resourced written outcomes.
Key Stage 1 – Children in Years 1 – 2 have access to EaL support in small group activities that are planned by the teaching staff and delivered by our experienced classroom assistants.
Key Stage 2 – Children in Years 3 – 6 are supported by teaching assistants who work closely with class teachers, senior leaders and curriculum leaders to work on children developing key vocabulary.
Children in all year groups have access to multilingual resources where needed. For example many of our books are dual language.
At all stages and in all subject areas in school the children are encouraged to develop their grasp and use of English through engaging lessons and through well focused support.
