Self-isolation* [UPDATED]
Following on from the PM update on 16th March 2020:
THIS INFORMATION IS CORRECT AS OF 09:00 ON 17 MARCH 2020
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement yesterday:
- Everyone in the UK should avoid non-essential travel and contact with others to curb Coronavirus (however schools remain open as an essential service).
NEW*** Where people live together in one household:
If one person in any household has a persistent cough or fever, everyone living there must stay at home for 14 days.
Those people should, if possible, avoid leaving the house “even to buy food or essentials” – but they may leave the house “for exercise and, in that case, at a safe distance from others”.
Where an individual lives alone:
Anyone who has the following symptoms
- a high temperature – hot to touch on the chest or back
- a new, continuous cough – coughing repeatedly
are required to stay at home in individual self-isolation and not leave their house for 7 days from when their symptoms started.
There is no need to go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. There is no need to contact NHS 111.

If someone feels they cannot cope with their symptoms at home, or their condition gets worse, or their symptoms do not get better after 7 days, then they should use the NHS 111 online Coronavirus service. If they do not have internet access, they need to call NHS 111. For a medical emergency they dial 999.
